Job description

The In-House Health and Safety Assistant supports the development, implementation, and monitoring of workplace health and safety programs. This role helps ensure compliance with relevant regulations, promotes a safe working environment, and assists in minimizing workplace risks and incidents.

Reports to: Corporate Safety Director / Legal Team

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in implementing and maintaining health and safety policies and procedures
  • Support regular workplace inspections and risk assessments
  • Help investigate incidents, accidents, and near misses, and maintain accurate records
  • Monitor compliance with safety regulations and internal standards
  • Assist in organizing and delivering safety training and awareness programs
  • Maintain safety documentation, reports, and logs
  • Support emergency preparedness plans, including drills and procedures
  • Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Communicate safety updates and initiatives to employees
  • Assist with audits and regulatory inspections

Working Conditions

  • Primarily office-based with regular time spent in operational and work areas
  • May require occasional lifting, standing, or walking through job sites
  • Use of safety equipment as required
  • Based across multiple company locations in the greater Chicago area, with occasional travel between sites

  • Reduction in workplace incidents
  • Timely completion of safety inspections and reports
  • Compliance audit results
  • Employee participation in safety programs

Requirements

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety or related field preferred)
  • Basic knowledge of workplace safety regulations (e.g., OSHA standards in the U.S.)
  • Previous experience in a safety-related role is a plus

Skills and Competencies

  • Ability to identify hazards and suggest practical solutions
  • Organizational and record-keeping skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.)
